Best practices for your website

Websites are one of the most cost-effective marketing tools and yet so often, they’re underutilized. When people visit your website, this could be the first impression they get of your recycling program. So, here are some tips to help make it the best tool possible:

·         Keep your URL simple and easy to remember. Does your website URL have backslashes or dashes that make it difficult to remember? Does your URL resemble this: www.smalltownusa.gov/recycling-program/thisisridiculouslylong? If so, there’s an easy fix! Come up with an easy name to remember, such as www.RecycleCleanPhoenix.org, and register it at DomainDirect.com or GoDaddy.com for less than $20 a year. Any webmaster can show you how to redirect this URL to your existing one so you don’t need to worry about redoing your entire website. (The old address will still work too.)
·         Evaluate your website as if you were a first-time visitor. Consider what information you would want to find. Perhaps the recycling basics such as what can be recycled, how residents can get a recycling container and learn their recycling schedule. Is this information easy to find? If not, some simple changes.
·         Engage visitors with your website. People prefer conversational experiences online, so find ways to make your website interactive. This can be as easy as providing an email address for feedback or adding a sign-up feature for users to register for email newsletters.
