CVP blog post: What can we learn from a new anti-littering ad?

Check out this new 40-second anti-littering ad from Ireland on Waste & Recycling News. At first watch, you might think about how silly and comical it is – a person dressed up as an anti-littering mascot literally tackling people on the street as they litter random objects instead of throwing them away (or recycling them!). But beyond the surface, there is an approach here that recycling coordinators can apply to their own education efforts.

When tailoring a message, simplicity and humor can effectively get the job done. Clearly the purpose of the ad is to show people that it’s not okay to litter. By cutting through the clutter and getting straight to the point you want to make, you can more effectively reach residents with your message. Add in a little humor and you’re sure to catch their attention.
What do you think about the ad? Is this an approach you think could work with your community residents?
